Solihull Moors vs Tamworth FC

Tamworth FC26 Feb - 09:28

After the point at home to promotion chasing Forest Green Rovers before Christmas, Andy Peaks Lambs made the short journey to Damson Park for the first league meeting between The Lambs and Moors since February 2016 when both sides were in the National Lea

KICK OFF
There was just one change to the Lambs starting eleven with Tom Tonks replacing Alex Fletcher, and Andy Whing’s home side got the game underway going down the slope towards the away end of the ground.
Strong winds, heralding coming storms battered the ground and made things difficult when the ball was played high, so early football was played on the deck.
Digie forced a corner on the right on 6 which was hooked away from danger and on 9 Morrison made a strong run into the right of the area but his cross low cross from the right came to nothing.
Oakley made a nuisance of himself down the Moors right on 10 until a foul by Enoru gave the home side a freekick by the corner flag which Crompton had to head high over his own bar for a corner on the same side. The ball whipped in a Singh fumbled it but Tonks was on hand to boot it away from a yard in front of the goal line,.
The Lambs raced to the other end and Tonks launched a throw into the box from the left, but only once the referee had separated Wreh and Osborne, and another foul prevented a Lambs attack.
Wilkinson made headway down the right and into the centre on 16 but ran out of steam allowing Morrison to take the ball off his toes and Enoru was similarly dispossessed by Clarke after a purposeful carry of the ball into the final third on 18.
The home side took the lead on 20 though when Wilkinson was allowed time to advance to within a few yards of the edge of the box and drive a shot on target which zipped past Singh and into the back of the net almost before he could move for it. (1-0, 20 mins)
Stevens nearly doubled the advantage when The Lambs lost the ball from the restart cutting in from the left and along the edge of the box before firing a right footed shot wide of the right hand upright.
There was a stoppage in play on 26 when Milnes went up for a header and took the brunt of a stray arm leaving him prostrate on the ground and needing treatment before he could continue, after first changing his boots.
Neither side were able to forge much of an opening for the next ten minutes or so, until a foul by Crompton on Wilkinson on the left on 34 allowed Moors to take a direct approach from the freekick but they found Singh well positioned and Tonks picked up a booking for a blocking tackle on the same player on 36 which put him to the floor once again.
Oakley and Tipton combined to force a right sided corner on 38 and there was another from Wilkinson’s blocked cross which Cockerill-Mollett headed away but it was played back in to Whitmore and his strike forced Singh to push it around the post for another flagkick.
At the other end, a deep throw into the box caused problems but the Moors defence were able to clear the danger, and another from the opposite side on 43 popped up for Wreh who struck at Barrett in the home goal, but a foul in the build up would have prevented a goal had it gone past the Moors keeper.
As first half added time came into view Crompton, Tonks and finally Enoru worked the ball upfield but the latter saw his shot from 20 yards blocked and 2 minutes added time was announced and ended with the home side holding the edge.

HT 1-0
With the DAZN cameras rolling once again, The Lambs restarted proceedings and went on the offensive with Enoru cutting through the left of the box to drive a low cross towards goal and it was touched away and out for a corner on the right, which came to nothing.
Singh was called upon on 50 to deny Wilkinson’s curling shot that looked like it would hit the target, with a flying one handed save around the post for a corner and from the ensuing play Digie was booked for a foul on Stevens.
Stevens dusted himself down to take the freekick from 20 yards but only managed to chip it over the cross bar.
The same Moors player was involved again on 55, taking the ball down well on the left of the box before striking for his sides second of the afternoon, but he found Singh perfectly placed to deny him with a close range block.
There was a stoppage on 57 to allow Cockerill-Mollett, who had gone down with cramp, to receive treatment and he was unable to continue so Fairlamb came on in his place and when Oakley received the ball down the Moors right and found Wilkinson in the centre the number ten took it past one defender before firing low past Singh for his second goal of the afternoon (2-0, 59 mins)
Milnes struck from distance on 66 straight into the arms of Barrett and The Lambs made a double change with Creaney and Sundire replacing Tonks and Crompton.
A long ball through to Enoru allowed the winger to play it back into the box from the left on 73, and it fell invitingly for Morrison to go for goal from 12 yards but he found Barrett in the way, and a foul on Milnes on the right gave The Lambs the dead ball on 76 but Creaney was unable to get his head to it and it skipped out of play on the far side.
There were two shouts for a penalty, one at each end, in quick succession after Ponticelli replaced Wreh on 79, but the referee was having none of it or at least chose not to give the second, for Solihull, after he failed to give the first, for Tamworth after two similar challenges saw players go down in the opposition boxes.
The home fans then celebrated Wilkinson’s hattrick on 82 when he chipped home from the left of the box into an empty net, but he had already been denied by the offside flag and Singh was happy to let the ball go over him into the net before restarting play, despite the incorrect intentions of the scoreboard.
Ponticelli sent a lofted cross from the left over the six yard box on 88 and Enoru managed to get it back into the danger area with a first time right footed volley but Barrett was first to it and seven minutes added time was shown.
A hopeful strike from Enoru from the right of the box on 92 failed to test Barrett, while Stevens low shot was straight at Singh a minute later. He was denied again by The Lambs keeper on 97 when he made headway to the edge of the box and shot low towards the bottom right, and Williams forced Barrett into a save with his feet from a left footed strike in the final action of 2024.
